University of Westminster

The University of Westminster has adopted the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a framework to support its mission of contributing to a range of social, environmental, and economic outcomes, focussing on well-being, sustainability, and equality, diversity and inclusion. Students are developing a strong understanding of sustainability issues while being in one of the most diverse universities in the world. Progress is driven by the Centre for Education and Teaching Innovation and includes carbon literacy training to teach students the science behind climate change, how they can create positive change, and the employability benefits to being carbon literate citizens. In the School of Life Sciences students are taught a range of sustainability-related subjects from ecology, plant biology, to global sustainability issues. The School of Architecture and Cities has set up a Climate Action Taskforce ensuring that education on climate change and biodiversity loss are incorporated into their programmes. The Westminster Business School is making sustainability a core principle within the curriculum, which includes the popular MSc in Sustainability Management and Innovation. The SDGs are embedded in the University’s research and knowledge exchange strategies and incorporated into various groups and initiatives. These include the research community around Sustainable Cities and Urban Environment, the Climate Change Taskforce in the Students’ Union, and the Centre for the Study of the Production of the Built Environment. The university also forms one of the London Higher and London Councils knowledge partnerships between borough-led climate programmes and universities.
