College of North West London

The transition away from carbon emissions to full sustainability by 2050 is now recognised as essential for the future of our society and momentum for change is building. Training providers, employers, and learners all have a role to play in building thriving sustainable economies and helping people move from job roles that will be phased out, to new, in-demand specialisms. By doing so, they will develop the skills to create a more sustainable world.

The College of North West London has partnered with Brent Council to build a Green Skills Centre of Excellence and develop courses that focus on exploring net zero targets and improving the energy efficiency and carbon footprint of existing homes. We will be giving students the skills to install clean or cleaner technologies, and even to achieve passive homes using modern methods of construction. Our flexible curriculum is adaptable and can be changed to suit learners of all abilities and specialisms.

The exciting new centre of excellence will enable educators, employers, and other organisations to work in partnership to develop a programme that promotes employability, learning, and skills.

HRUC

At Harrow, Richmond and Uxbridge Colleges (HRUC) the green skills agenda is embedded into our curriculum with units across several of our courses, particularly within building services, construction, engineering, sustainability, and food-to-fork programmes. The work extends through to our higher-level technical qualifications which are part of our West London Institute of Technology provision.

Within construction and engineering courses at Richmond Campus there has been an investment in ground-source heat pumps, retrofit and PV panels to continue providing the skills and knowledge our students need to meet employer needs.

There are also discrete units on many courses and we are developing a course linked to low-carbon transport. This aligns with our existing e-vehicle and hybrid vehicle courses with facilities that include a CarTrain, automotive technology products through Lucas Nuelle, and an electric mini, providing students with the opportunity to extend their practical skills along with underpinning theory and knowledge. We are delivering workshops to our GCSE students to increase awareness of green skills and green jobs along with employability skills needed for the future.
